Office of Communications
In order to complete utility plant waterproofing and roadway work for the winter, the Quinn roadway lanes under construction from University Drive South to just under the catwalk between Quinn and Healey Library are scheduled to shift on Monday, October 31. Vehicles will have access the remainder of the week.
Crews will need to close the Quinn roadway the following week from Monday, November 7, to Monday, November 14. Drivers will be directed to the Beacons rotary near the Clark Athletic Center. The Quinn upper level entrance will remain open to pedestrians. View a map showing the Quinn Roadway Closure and the temporary access route to the Beacons Rotary Dropoff.
Webcam Aims at ISC Site
A new webcam atop the Healey Library shows real-time footage of construction of the Integrated Sciences Complex (ISC). The camera aims at the building footprint, now a 16-inch concrete base slab foundation. Last week nearly 1,700 cubic yards of concrete was poured for the ISC central section and east wing base slab.
Utility excavation and work will continue on both the east and south sides of the ISC construction site. Work continues on the service elevator area in the service and supply tunnel. Trenching below the Quinn roadway for utilities will continue next week, and work will progress to the grassy area between the Service and Supply lot and University Drive West.
Wheatley Hall roof update
The crane will return to the South Lot and will be in place for the next month to help crews hoist equipment and materials to the sixth floor for the new Wheatley Roof and Waterproofing Project. Access to a section of the Wheatley plaza overlooking the South Lot will be restricted due to crane activity.
Current construction activities include drilling and pipe placement in the stairwell and hallway floors and in some offices for the new drainage system as well as masonry work and installing roof anchors on the sixth floor roof, which will cause noise for nearby occupants.
Photovoltaic solar panels up and running
All 350 photovoltaic solar panels on the south facing, lower Wheatley Hall roof are active and connected to the UMass Boston power grid. Posted on a column in the Wheatley lobby, a digital readout shows the amount of energy generated, which is estimated to save the university $10,000 each year. NSTAR completed its final test on the campus’s first solar, renewable energy system last week.
