Between Gender and Ethnicity: Women’s Rights and Identity Politics in the Andes
Event Date: December 01, 2011 - 5 p.m.
Event Type: Open to public | Location: Campus Center, 3rd Floor, Room 3540
Sponsored by the Consortium on Gender, Security, and Human Rights
Speaker: Jane Jaquette, professor of diplomacy and world affairs at Occidental College
In the Andean region, indigenous groups have become an important political force, even participating in rewriting constitutions. On gender issues, indigenous demands raise important issues for feminists, as women's rights are understood within a cultural context of gender complementarity rather than gender equality. Jaquette will discuss the content of these debates and the implications on women's rights.
