From a Facilities Department standpoint, the preparation for the Blizzard of 2013 and subsequent cleanup went smoothly at UMass Boston. Most of us hunkered down when the university was closed as the storm blew in. By Monday morning, February 11, the campus had dug out of two feet of snow and was back in business.
Some 14 UMass Boston facilities staff and others on contract used a range of equipment around the clock for three days to keep roadways and fire lanes open. They plowed and maintained ten parking lots, along with entrances, walkways, stairways, and the campus’s central plaza. The equipment included at least four front-end loaders with16-foot-long plows, a back hoe, two salters, two bobcats, various plows, trucks, snow blowers, and—of course—shovels.
