Kyle Szatrowski Earns First Collegiate Win

University of Massachusetts Boston pitcher Kyle Szatrowski picked up his first win of the season and his college career in record fashion Wednesday. He threw the first no-hitter in UMass Boston program history in his third start on the mound.

The freshman management major from Agawam threw 126 pitches and struck out seven batters in the 5-0 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology. Not a single player from Wentworth successfully reached second base.

“The fifth inning I looked over the scoreboard, and that’s when I saw there were no hits,” Szatrowski says.

Freshman catcher Jack DeBiase, who was at the other end of Szatrowski’s pitches, was also looking at the scoreboard.

“Toward the sixth inning, I looked over at the scoreboard [and thought], ‘Geez, Kyle’s really throwing a gem,’ and everyone was like, ‘Shhh!’” DeBiase says.

At one point in the game, the scoreboard went out. But when it came back on, there was no denying that Szatrowski had done something no other Beacons pitcher has done before.

“[On that final pitch,] I was thinking, ‘Don’t throw it away,’ and then I was jumping up and down and saw Jack run out and I got tackled and it was great,” Szatrowski says.

The Beacons improve to 17-13-1 on the season with the shutout win.
