Helene Fuld Trust Scholars Focus on Serving Underprivileged Populations

The College of Nursing and Health Sciences at UMass Boston recently awarded 10 outstanding baccalaureate nursing program students with Helene Fuld Health Trust Scholarships. One of the goals of the Helene Fuld Health Trust is to improve the health and welfare of student nurses. This year’s scholarship recipients were chosen out of 240 highly qualified applicants. A committee of CNHS faculty and staff selected the recipients on the basis of leadership, academic performance, and financial need. The students were honored at the Helene Fuld Health Trust Scholarship Luncheon on November 8, 2011.
In keeping with the College of Nursing and Health Sciences’ vision to improve the health of diverse urban populations, a common theme among this year’s recipients is a desire to work with underprivileged populations locally and internationally. Shohana Afroz, a student in the Traditional Option, has volunteered at the Greater Boston Food Bank and has raised relief money for Hurricane Katrina and the tsunami in Indonesia. After completing her nursing studies, Shohana plans to return to her native Bangladesh to offer free health education sessions to the poor.
Mariela Baez, a student in the Accelerated Option, has witnessed firsthand the difficulty of gaining access to high quality care in underserved communities. After graduating, she plans to enroll in a Family Nurse Practitioner program and continue her work in underserved areas.
Katrina Hanscom, a student in the Traditional Option, has worked with Habitat for Humanity and Alternative Spring Breaks and wants to spend the rest of her life helping others.
Leanne Laventure, also in the Traditional Option, has done extensive volunteer work in the United States and in Kenya and hopes to one day become a traveling nurse working to provide healthcare in third world countries.
