Funds Support Susan G. Komen for the Cure
UMass Boston’s men’s and women’s ice hockey teams collected a record $700 at Saturday’s fifth annual Pink at the Rink fundraiser at the Clark Athletic Center. All of the money collected will be donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure in hopes of bringing an end to breast cancer.
Women’s head coach Colleen Harris says for the Beacons, the cause of breast cancer research is personal: a former UMass Boston alumna who battled breast cancer is now in remission.
“The support we had from our administration, staff, parents, and fans was phenomenal and we are proud of the work that our girls have done to make this such a huge success,” Harris says.
Both the men’s and women’s teams wore pink laces during Saturday’s doubleheader. Fans bought special edition “Pink the Rink” T-shirts, took part in raffles, and competed in a chuck-a-puck competition—all to raise awareness about breast cancer.
“Each year we are hoping to make this event bigger and better,” Harris says.
