UMass Boston, along with the four other UMass campuses, was awarded the Building on the Promise: Learn and Serve UMass grant, funded through the Corporation for National and Community Service's (CNCS) Learn and Serve Program. The goals of this grant are to address the economic downturn in our communities through increased civic engagement, student leadership, and service-learning. Each year for the past three years, close to 100 UMass Boston students became trained and certified tax preparer volunteers. Many of the tax preparer volunteers were students from the College of Management. Students volunteered more than 24 hours each tax season at a tax site in Boston. Last year, UMass Boston was a tax site that served eligible students, staff, and residents living in Harbor Point.
