UMass Boston Gerontology Students Participate in Memory Walk

Each year, the Gamma Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Phi Omega (SPO), the national academic honor and professional society in gerontology, is involved in fundraising efforts for the Alzheimer's Association. Those efforts culminate in the Memory Walk. Corina Oala, treasurer of SPO and team captain, led the UMass Boston Gerontology Team in this year's 6-mile walk. The walking team was comprised of Jane Tavares (vice president of SPO), Jiyoung Lyu, Chae Man Lee, Mai See Yang, Andrea Lindemer, and Hayley Gravette. Four team members also brought friends or significant others who walked with the team and showed their support.

Post registration and prior to the walk, team member Jane Tavares spotted Governor Deval Patrick. He was then approached by Corina Oala, who introduced the UMass Boston Gerontology Team and asked the governor if he would do the team the great honor of being photographed together.

This year's team raised nearly $1,300. This walk was much hotter than previous years, with temperatures reaching nearly 80 degrees, but that didn't slow down the UMass Boston team. Everyone was in great spirits, cheerful, and got to know one another or catch up as the walk progressed. Everyone had a great time and is already looking forward to next year's event.
