WUMB, Berklee Bring Fox Point Music Series to UMass Boston

WUMB Radio 91.9FM and Berklee College of Music are teaming up to hold a series of free outdoor concerts this summer at the Fox Point Pavilion on the University of Massachusetts Boston’s oceanfront campus.

The concerts, known as the Fox Point Music Series, will bring folk, rock, pop, blues, and soul music to UMass Boston Sundays through the month of August.  The concerts begin at 2 p.m.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Food and refreshments will also be sold on site. The Fox Point Music Series is part of the Berklee Summer in the City music series, where students and alumni of Berklee perform at venues across the Greater Boston area.

The Fox Point concerts are scheduled to kick off Sunday, August 5, at 2 p.m. with a performance by The Dwells, a neo-Americana folk duet. For more information, visit the WUMB website.

Sunday, August 5, 2 p.m.: The Dwells

The Dwells are a vocal swirl, drenched in memorable lyrics and infectious songwriting that pull inspiration from drama and expression in all mediums. Paige Califano and Matthew Bean both share a passion for visual and performance arts and try to incorporate much of the same kind of experimentation and automatism into their music. For their debut album, they collaborated with musician and sound designer Max Jeffers to develop a unique listening experience through creative recording techniques and expressive textures. Following the tradition of Carter-Cash, Parsons-Harris, and Welch-Rawlings, the Dwells use the medium of the duo to journey thorough genres and weave a new stitch in the warm world of acoustic music.

Sunday, August 12, 2 p.m.: Adrianne Lenker

Hailing from Minneapolis, Adrianne Lenker is an authentic and passionate singer, songwriter, and performer. Her debut CD, Stages of the Sun, produced by Steve Hodge (Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Sting), was released on LucidTunes when Lenker was only 14. The title cut was a 2005 Independent Music Awards top 5 finalist in the Singer/Songwriter category. Lenker's "My Bliss" was a finalist in the 2005 International Songwriting Competition. Four tracks from the album were featured on MTV's The Hills in 2007 and 2008.

Sunday: August 19, 2 p.m.: Herego

This folk/alt/indie/rock duo self describes as "Simon and Garfunkel meets Tim Burton meets your mother." Erin Casey—who has performed under the name Elephant Sky—had come to a creative standstill and set out to learn what other influences the world had to offer. With hints of country resonating throughout her voice, she left the small town life she had always known and travelled to Boston, Massachusetts.

Seeking a life he had yet to experience, Chris Carlberg left the familiar world of acting he had come to know in Los Angeles in search of a musical passion he felt was calling his name. Packing up every instrument he owned, Chris drove a van across the country and landed in a New England city he had never encountered before: Boston.

Erin and Chris met and began a journey that spanned broken strings and broken relationships and first formed a solid friendship, and then a brilliant musical duo. Like the cold nights of October, Herego is the wool sweater you pull on before walking amongst the reddened, dropping leaves; intense, yet caressing, commanding and promising.

Sunday, August 26, 2 p.m.: Carly Tefft

Carly Tefft is an 18-year-old singer-songwriter from Cape Cod, Massachusetts with inspirations including the Police, Carol King, Gavin DeGraw Jason Mraz, and Colbie Calliat. Tefft, a Berklee student, puts a contemporary and alternative spin on the singer-songwriter genre.

A guitarist since she was 13, Tefft began writing songs in high school, and at end of her senior year, released her self-produced EP, Carly Tefft, on which she played all of the instruments (drums, bass, guitar, piano, and vocals) on ten originals. Tefft has performed alongside Canary, Hannah Christianson, Entrain, and Emily Elbert, among others, at locations throughout Massachusetts, including the Cape Cod Melody Tent. She has also performed on several Massachusetts radio stations.
