Activity Descriptions

Examples of activities that partner university resources with the community include:

Community-Engaged Teaching and Learning: the university can employ a wide-range of activities that enhance a student’s academic experience while making critical connections to community.  These include: 
• Service-learning
• Internships
• Practicum
• Community Federal Work Study
• Community-based and life-long educational programming

Community-Engaged Research and Creative Activities: University faculty, staff, and students facilitate a variety of research activities that can be connected with the community.  These include:
• Translational research
• Community-based research
• Collaborative research
• Action research
• Participatory action research
• Advocacy research
• Empowerment research
• Public art performances/presentations

Community-Engaged Service: Community-driven and serving programs offered by the university to address a wide range of community needs.  Examples are:
• Sharing of individual expertise
• Volunteerism
• Community development initiatives
• Community events
• Public programming
• Pre-collegiate programs
• Youth summer camps
• Public mediation

Community-Engaged Economic Development: in addition its role in workforce and career training, universities play a critical role in economic and community development through supporting entrepreneurship and connecting the public to scholarly endeavors.  This can be represented through:
• Bringing to market research that supports public services and servants
• Small and minority business development
• Copyrights, patents, and licenses that advance a public good
• Business incubators
