A dual citizen of the US and Switzerland, he is an avid gardener, swordsman, and material scientist. He served in the Swiss Army and US Coast Guard, traveled widely and has a particular interest in terrestrial and maritime infrastructure, including railways, ships, ports and docks. Neighborhoods and distinct city districts are of natural interest to him, as well as the policies, histories, and diverse people which constitute them.
