BEACON BEGINNINGS: Orientation for New Students
FOR NEW STUDENTS
The Importance of Student Email
The university routinely sends important information via email to all students at their UMass Boston email address – firstname.lastname001@umb.edu.
It is important that your student check his/her university email account regularly. The Office of Financial Aid Services, Registrar's Office, Housing Office are just some of the departments on campus that rely on email to reach students.
Students can forward their umb.edu mail to their personal account but should be aware that it may come in as "spam" and may be automatically deleted.

UMB Alert
The UMB Alert System is a software program that allows UMass Boston officials to notify the campus community of emergencies and public information in a timely and concise manner. This is just one of a number of means to convey this information, but one that can provide information directly to students.
What means of communication does the system use?
The UMB Alert System will initially send emergency alerts to all UMass Boston subscribers via email. This is the default mode by which all UMB subscribers will receive messages In order to receive text and voicemail alerts, users must provide a contact phone number by visiting the system's website. While participation in the text and voice message notification is optional, enrolling is strongly encouraged.
When will the UMB Alert System be used?
The system will be used to convey information related to emergencies with the potential to adversely affect our campus community, as well as public information that may also need to be conveyed in a timely and concise manner.

Code of Student Conduct
The Code of Student Conduct is managed within the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs by the dean of students. The code provides a framework of standard acceptable behavior for students. The two sections are: academic honesty (concerning issues of academic integrity) and student misconduct (concerning issues that infringe upon the rights of others or the educational process of the university).
The Code outlines a process for addressing all cases. While differing slightly for each section of the Code, the basic elements are as follows:
- Students are notified of all possible charges and given an opportunity to meet regarding those charges.
- If the student chooses not to meet, the student will be sanctioned in his/her absence.
- There are time limits for completion of each portion of a case, both for students and for staff/faculty.
- Students have the option to appeal at the Vice Chancellor level, or the Chancellor level (in cases of a sanction of expulsion).
The student judicial process is not a legal process, and the records are not part of the student’s academic record. Students will need to give permission for their judicial record to be shared.
The Student Code of Conduct can be viewed in its entirety here.
