Helping Distressed and Distressing Individuals

If you know a student or employee that you feel is distressed or distressing to others, please follow the three steps outlined in the Distressed and Distressing Protocol. The first is to gather information on the person and the situation. You should look for psychological, physical, or academic warning signs. The second step is to assess the level of distress. Is this an urgent matter or is it important, but not urgent? The final step is to assess your own relationship with the student or employee. Are you close enough to them to approach him or her directly and discuss the situation, or would you feel more comfortable contacting the Dean of Students’ Office or Human Resources?
