External Funding Databases
Most of the databases described below are available via any computer with a UMass Boston IP address. To access these databases from a computer without a UMass Boston IP address, please see the information sheet "Accessing funding databases."
The Community of Science (COS) is an Internet-based resource for funding opportunities and alert services. COS also offers EXPERTISE, a database of professional researcher profiles in North America for encouraging collaborative research projects.
SPIN tracks funding opportunities from federal, private, and corporate sources. Infoed, the vendor for SPIN, also offers the GENIUS application for matching principal investigators' profiles with potential funding sources.
Researchers are also encouraged to utilize the grants.gov database, which is the single access point for over 900 grant programs offered by the 26 federal grant-making agencies.
The Grant Adviser Plus is an online database and newsletter. New deadline memos/program descriptions come out at the beginning of each month 11 times per year. The Current Issue Files page on the Internet offers you a series of choices for researching grant and fellowship possibilities. You will be able to download your own copy of The Grant Advisor early each month in various formats. Additional features include current deadline memo hyperlinks divided into the TGA subject areas (Fine Arts, Sciences, etc.).
GrantsNet provides information on funding opportunities for training in the biological and medical sciences (a free service provided by the American Association for the Advancement of Science). It contains programs that offer training and research funding for graduate and medical students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty, as well as programs in science, math, engineering, and technology for undergraduate faculty and students.
The ORSP has access to the Foundation Online Directory, which provides information about public and private foundations in the U.S., including profiles and links to foundation websites. UMass Boston faculty, staff, and students interested in using the online directory should contact Jim Mortenson at 617.287.5614 or james.mortenson@umb.edu.
