Administered by the Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR), UMass Boston annually offers the following four internal grant programs.
Please note: Applications for the FY 2009 competitions are now available online by clicking on the appropriate link directly above. January 18, 2008, is the submission deadline for the first three programs, and May 23, 2008, is the submission deadline for the Doctoral Dissertation program.
College of Liberal Arts Dean's Fund for Faculty Development
The College of Liberal Arts (CLA) Dean’s Fund for Faculty Development provides funds to support CLA faculty research and creative activity through the following three funds: travel fund; research fund; and discretionary fund. President's Initiatives Funds
Every year in April, the Office of the President of the University of Massachusetts announces the President’s Initiative Funds which in 2007 provided a combined total of $1,250,000 to the UMass campuses. The next request for proposals is expected to be announced in early April 2008.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVES FUNDS
In 2007, the Science & Technology (S&T) Initiatives Fund provided a total of $1,000,000 to promote the University of Massachusetts as the Commonwealth’s public research university and ensure that the path to social and economic progress in Massachusetts goes through UMass. The S&T Initiatives Fund also directly supports the UMass Board of Trustees’ strategic priority to strengthen the university system’s research enterprise and grow its portfolio substantially.
CREATIVE ECONOMY INITIATIVES FUNDS
In 2007, the Creative Economy Initiatives Fund (a fund for the arts, humanities, and social sciences) provided a total of $250,000. What follows are examples of typical creative economy research or projects.
- the economic development impact of cultural initiatives (museums, theatre, art installations, etc.)
- the social and health impacts on new technologies in communities
- the changing nature of labor markets and their impact on economic development
- projects developing cultural or artistic events that engage communities
- initiatives that promote community engagement and political participation
- an examination of the economic and social impact of changing patterns of migration
