Information, guidelines, and application form

OVERVIEW
An intensive, three-day grant writing workshop designed to teach faculty new to grant writing how to formulate a fundable concept, search for potential funding sources, transform a concept into a proposal, prepare a budget, and compile a competitive proposal tailored for a specific sponsor and grant competition. At the end of the workshop, all participants will have prepared a finished grant proposal that can be submitted to an external sponsor for review and potential funding.

INTENDED AUDIENCE
This workshop is directed at UMass Boston new faculty members who want to learn how to prepare a competitive grant proposal, as well as those faculty members new to or returning to the grant-writing process. Dawn Underwood, an experienced and successful grant writer and the associate director of sponsored programs at Indiana State University, will serve as the workshop facilitator.

DAILY FORMAT
The workshop will be held in a technology-rich classroom in the Instructional Technology Center. Morning sessions will entail structured presentation, demonstration, and conversation, while afternoon sessions will be devoted to supervised participant activities spent finding funding resources, developing problem/need statements, and preparing a grant proposal (e.g., writing sections devoted to objectives, methodology, workplan, timeline, evaluation, budget). Each participant will be provided with the book Proposal Planning and Writing, Third Edition, by Jeremy and Lynn Miner. A light breakfast as well as lunch will be provided each day.

COMPETITIVE APPLICATION PROCESS
A maximum of 15 participants can be accommodated in the workshop. Participants will be selected following the review of brief applications that present an overview of the applicant's proposed project and a statement of the applicant's goals for participating in the workshop. A three-member review panel of two faculty members and the director of the UMass Boston Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) will judge applications using the following two criteria:

  1. high intrinsic value and intellectual or creative merit (posing a significant question, exploring an important issue, addressing a challenging problem, or expressing an artistic idea); and
  2. promise of making worthwhile contributions to your field, to your professional development, or the college's research or curricular needs.
