Department of Energy
Application of Nuclear Science and Technology Initiative
Due date: May 6, 2009
The Department of Energy has released this FOA to further the mission of the Nuclear Physics Program, which is to discover, explore, and understand all forms of nuclear matter. The primary goal of this initiative is to pursue forefront nuclear science research and development important to the Nuclear Physics Program mission.
It is anticipated that a total of up to approximately $7,000,000 will be available for awards in the first year, starting as early as FY 2009. Over the estimated five-year span of these initiatives, the total funding may be approximately $30,000,000. The number and size of awards will depend on the number of applications selected for award, and the availability of appropriated funds. The Department of Energy reserves the right to fund, in whole or in part, any, all, or none of the applications submitted.
Transportation Electrification Grant
Due date: May 13, 2009
The goal of the Transportation Electrification grant is to establish development, evaluation, and education projects to accelerate the market introduction and penetration of electric cars. The Department of Energy's goal is for the vehicles and electric technologies to achieve a fast market introduction and reach high volume production. There are 4 areas of interest under this funding opportunity. Approximately $378 million dollars is expected to be available. Anticipated project period durations are 3 to 4 years.
Electric Drive Vehicle Battery and Component Manufacturing Initiative
Due date: May 19, 2009
A key objective of this initiative is to accelerate the development and production of various electric car systems to substantially reduce gas consumption. A supporting goal is the development of production-ready batteries, power electronics, and electric machines that can be cost-effectively produced in high volume to support the introduction of electric cars. The Department of Energy anticipates making awards with project period durations of 2 to 3 years. There ar 7 areas of interest under this funding opportunity.
For both the Transportation Electrification Grant and the Electric Drive Vehicle Battery and Component Manufacturing Initiative there are cost share requirements of 50%, but the Department of Energy will consider a cost share as low as 25%. Anything under 50% will require a justification. Area 4 under the Transportation Electrification Grant is the exception in that it has a cost share requirement of 20%.
