NIH Challenge Grants

The NIH Challenge Grants in Health and Science Research (RC1) seek out research that will focus on specific knowledge gaps, scientific opportunities, new technologies, data generation, or particular research methods.

Research plans submitted with the application must articulate how the proposed studies will significantly extend our understanding of biomedical or behavioral science and/or health through its work in the particular Challenge Area. The NIH has designated at least $200 million in FYs 2009 and 2010 to fund 200 or more grants, contingent upon the submission of a sufficient number of scientifically meritorious applications.

The requested budget may not exceed $500,000 total costs per year for a maximum of $1,000,000 total costs over a two-year project period. Research and related budgets are required for all applications. No modular budgets will be accepted.
