NIH Administrative Supplements

Multiple due dates:  Check NIH IC Websites

Highlights

  • Opportunity for investigators with active NIH Research grants to request administrative supplements for the purpose of accelerating the tempo of scientific research on active grants for up to 2 years.
  • There is no maximum dollar limit on the budget request for a revision application but should not total more than 50% of the parent grant.
  • Administrative supplements can be for Center Grants (Ps), Career Development Awards (Ks), Institutional Training Grants (Ts), Cooperative Agreements (Us), and Educational Development Grants.

Applications may be submitted throughout FY 2009 and FY 2010. However, some NIH Institutes and Centers may have specific deadlines for submission of administrative supplements and will list these on their own websites. So be sure to check the appropriate website.

Funds requested as Administrative Supplements must be within the general scope of the peer-reviewed activities and aims approved within the parent grant. As with the competitive revisions applications may only be requested for up top 2 years. So the scope and budget of the requested supplement should reflect aims and goals that can be accomplished within that limited timeframe.

Requests selected for funding  in FY 2010 will be limited to 1 year for the project and budget period. For supplements to Research Grants there is no maximum dollar limit on what may be requested in the budget; however, the requested budget must be in line with the work being proposed. The NIH expects to award supplements of not more than 50% of the amount of the parent grant.

Areas of Interest

  • Equipment purchases (under $100,000)
  • Research employment opportunities for predoctoral students, including medical students in "off years" (e.g., medical, dental, veterinary, clinical psychology, nursing) seeking extended time off for research or on shorter term breaks.
  • Research employment opportunities for postdoctoral students, including extending support for senior postdocs.
  • Research employment opportunities for recent college and master's degree graduates.
  • Comparative effectiveness research (CER).

To be eligible under CER the application must meet criteria of "a rigorous evaluation of the impact of different options that are available for treating a given medical condition for a particular set of patients." Administrative supplement requests will be reviewed by the NIH Program and Grants Management Staff with expertise relevant to the project. Awards will be determined on the basis of the merit of the project, its applicability to the goals of the Recovery Act, and the availability of funds. Applicants will be notified regarding the review outcome.

Administrative Supplements Providing Summer Research Experiences for Students and Science Educators

Multiple due dates:  Check NIH IC Websites

Highlights

  • Opportunity for investigators with active NIH Research Grants to request administrative supplements for the purpose of promoting job creation, economic development, and accelerating the pace and achievement of scientific research.
  • NIH will not consider requests which are solely to restore previously applied budget adjustments to a project nor to supplant previous institutional commitments to supporting individuals and or other project costs.

These supplements will also encourage students to more seriously pursue research careers in the health related sciences, as well as provide elementary, middle, and high school teachers, community college faculty, and faculty from non-research intensive institutions with short-term research experiences in NIH-funded laboratories. The funds requested must be within the general scope of the peer-reviewed activities and aims approved within the parent grant.

The funding can be used to cover cost increases that are associated with providing research experiences in the conduct of NIH-supported research, as long as they are within the original scope of the parent project. Any cost increases need to result from making modifications to the parent project in order to take advantage of opportunities that would increase the value of the project consistent with its originally approved objectives and purposes or to accelerate the tempo of the scientific research.

Funding Priorities

  • Encourages submissions in all scientific and programmatic areas funded by the NIH.
  • Summer Research Opportunities for high school and undergraduate students
  • Summer Research Opportunities for science educators (e.g., elementary, middle school, and high school teachers, community college faculty, and faculty from non-research intensive institutions)

Supplements may request salary support for summer employment, as long as it reflects a direct contribution to accelerating the tempo of scientific research, but there are restrictions on the dollar limits. Administrative supplement requests will be reviewed by the NIH Program and Grants Management Staff with expertise relevant to the project. Awards will be determined on the basis of the merit of the project, its applicability to the goals of the Recovery Act, and the availability of funds. Applicants will be notified regarding the review outcome.
