Overview of FY 1997-2007 award totals

As an institution, the University of Massachusetts Boston was awarded a total of $41,773,563 in extramural support in FY 2007, representing an 7.9% increase from the previous year, and a total increase of nearly 50.6% in the last six years. A truly outstanding achievement—one made possible by our remarkable and diverse faculty and staff. Thanks to them we are moving ever closer to achieving our goal of $50 million in research grant and sponsored program awards.

FY 2007 awards by sponsor type

The breakdown of data by sponsor type show that just more than half of the total is from federal sponsors. In particular, $8.8 million from the U.S. Department of Education, $5.3 million is from the National Science Foundation, $2.3 million from the National Institutes of Health, and $1.4 million from the U.S. Department of Labor.

Awards from colleges and universities are typically subcontracts and awards, and may also be from federal sources. Increasing the 2 percent of awards from business and industry is a focus of the university's Venture Development Center.

FY 2007 awards by project type

When broken down by project type, the FY07 award data reveal that research awards dominate (Figure 4). This finding is a reflection of the Carnegie Foundation's accurate classification of UMass Boston as a research-intensive university with outstanding doctoral programs in nine areas and a strong, research-active faculty.
