Research and Graduate Studies:
Charge and proposed issues
Research: Recognizing the potential to build upon the innovative scholarly pursuits of faculty and students, this group will develop a comprehensive plan to increase significantly the research and development enterprise at UMass Boston, and outline a roadmap for enhancing graduate studies.
Develop a research strategic plan
- Identify the existing research and development strengths and interests of faculty and students, compare this against significant competitor universities in the region and nation, and propose a small number of interdisciplinary areas of research excellence that present the competitive position of UMass Boston in the New England region and nation.
- Identify the opportunities that will be available at the state, federal, and international levels that could position UMass Boston to grow its research resources.
- Based upon the strengths and interests of the faculty and the opportunities that will be available, develop a set of research goals and the metrics to determine success in reaching these goals.
- Propose a roadmap for UMass Boston to follow as it seeks to expand or refocus the university’s research resources to increase significantly the research and development enterprise.
Recommend resources and infrastructure needed to
achieve the goals of the research strategic plan
- Provide recommendations for the acquisition, allocation, and use of university resources necessary to achieve the goals of the research strategic plan, including, as appropriate, the following areas:
- Recruitment of researchers (e.g., tenure-track faculty, endowed faculty, research faculty, visiting faculty, and postdoctoral students)
- Recruitment of professional and technical staff (e.g., electronics technicians, glassblowers, animal care technicians)
- Research institutes and centers
- University Advancement (e.g., corporate and foundation support, access to venture capital)
- Departments and offices of the Division of Administration and Finance
- University Communications (e.g., market our research success)
- Government Relations (e.g., obtain state and federal earmarks for research)
Provide recommendations as appropriate for the development and use of university infrastructure necessary to achieve the goals of the research strategic plan, including, as appropriate, the following areas:
- The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs
- The Venture Development Center
- Office of Graduate Studies (i.e., identify ways in which graduate academic programs contribute to the research and development enterprise, and how the research and development enterprise can enhance graduate academic programs)
- Research laboratories and studios
- Information technology
- The Healey Library
- UMass Boston core research facilities
