Academic Support & Advising

For more complete information, visit: http://www.uac.umb.edu

A number of resources in these areas are available to UMass Boston undergraduates. Students in all colleges benefit from the University Advising Center’s services focusing on international students, co-ops and internships, study abroad, student exchange, career services, and academic help for students with learning disabilities. Academic advising and guidance are also available to all students; locations vary depending on what program they’re enrolled in, and their academic status.

The Office of Academic Support Programs

This office provides courses and tutoring designed to enable students to succeed in their studies. Its primary focus is on instruction and tutorials in critical reading and writing and mathematics skills, but students can also seek help through this office with any problems that affect their academic careers. Offerings include

  • the Subject Tutorial Program: individual and/or group tutoring for students enrolled in 100- and 200-level courses in the humanities, languages, mathematics, and social and natural sciences;
  • tutorials in analytic language development: special attention paid to the reading, writing, and thinking skills necessary for success at all levels of study, offered to undergraduates through the Reading, Writing, and Study Skills Center; degree-credit courses in critical reading and writing;
  • non-degree-credit-bearing courses in mathematics skills and English as a Second Language.

The Office of Academic Support Programs is open 9:00 to 5:00 Monday through Friday, in room 421 on the third floor of McCormack Hall. The phone number is 7-6550.

The University Advising Center

Even after students have chosen a major or concentration in CAS or CM, University Advising Center staff are always available to discuss questions and concerns about college requirements and University regulations. Other Advising Center services, available to students in all the University’s colleges, include

  • a skills and assessment program
  • services for international students, including academic concerns and issues
    of immigration status
  • co-op and internship placements
  • study abroad programs in any of more than twenty countries
  • access to the National Student Exchange Program
  • comprehensive career services, including an on-campus recruitment program

The Co-op/Internship Office

This office helps qualified students locate work assignments directly related to their fields of study. Co-op students are usually paid for part- or full-time work over a semester, a summer, or a six-month period. Interns generally work part time—12-20 hours a week—for a semester, a summer, or longer, and may or may not be paid. Both co-op and internship students may receive credit for their work with the program.

Career Services

For more complete information, visit: http://www.careers.umb.edu/

Staff in this office provide assistance throughout each student’s time at UMass Boston. Students consult the staff about such questions as choosing a major, preparing a resumé, or improving interview skills. Special career counseling is available for those interested in medicine, law, or other fields involving graduate study. Seminars in resumé-writing and interviewing techniques, a career resource library, on-campus interviewing programs, and job fairs are available to help students find satisfying work after graduation.

University Advising Center hours are 8:30 to 6:00 Monday through Thursday, and 8:30 to 5:00 on Fridays. It’s located in room 625 on the third floor of McCormack Hall, and the staff can be reached at 7-5500.
