Computers for Student Use

For more detailed information, visit Computing Services at: www.cc.umb.edu

The Department of Computing Services supports the academic needs of students through a variety of services, including teaching, walk-in, and specialized computer labs; a campus-wide Ethernet network; Internet access; electronic mail; PPP dial-in access; on-campus computer-based instruction; Internet portal support; hands-on workshops; lab consulting; and the production of electronic and printed technical documentation.

General Use Computer Labs

The Department operates and maintains ten instructional and walk-in computer labs, containing the latest Windows and Macintosh PCs, loaded with a variety of academic software. These general use labs are open to both undergraduate and graduate students and complement the many specialized labs run by academic departments. The general use labs are located on the UL and 3rd floor levels of the Healey Library. Student and staff consultants are available in the lab areas to assist student users with computer, software, and lab issues. Lab schedules and hours of operation are usually posted outside the labs, or may be obtained from the lab consultants.

Adaptive Computing Lab

The Department also operates the Adaptive Computing Lab (ACL), a nationally recognized resource for students, faculty, and staff with physical or learning disabilities. The lab includes a document reader, a voice synthesizer, and a Braille printer. The Lab also maintains staff and student consultants during hours of operation. The ACL is located on the upper level (UL) of the Healey Library.

Graduate and Research Computing Lab

The Graduate and Research Computing (GRC) Multimedia Lab is a specialized lab for graduate student and faculty researchers. Its primary purpose is research computing and assisting users with the production of research papers for publication, conferences, and class assignments. The lab contains powerful, multi-processor, PC workstations with an extensive suite of software, including statistical, geographic, mathematical, office, image and video editing, page layout, and web authoring. The lab also contains many hardware items, including B&W and color laser printers, 36-inch inkjet printer-plotter, film scanners and recorders, document and OCR scanners, digitizer, video capture systems, CD burners, and projector. The lab also offers staff consultants during hours of operation, including a statistician to assist users with survey research. The GRC is located on the 3rd floor of the Healey Library.

Computer Training

Members of the Computing Services staff offer hands-on workshops at the start of each term, covering a variety of topics from “Introduction to Windows 2000” to “Advanced SPSS.” Additional information and schedules for these workshops can be found on the websites for Computing Services (www.cc.umb.edu) and the GRC (www.cc.umb.edu/grc).

Email

Electronic mail (email) has become a very important means for students and faculty to communicate. Students are issued an email account once they have registered. If you currently have an email account, through an ISP, you may use it to communicate with the University email system. A University email account is required to obtain a University PPP account, which affords members of the campus community access to the Internet from home.
