Student Handbook

A Message from the Chancellor

Photo of Chancellor MotleyWelcome to UMass Boston! All members of the campus community—especially your professors—stand ready to provide you with an enriching and rewarding educational experience, both inside and outside the classroom.

This student handbook will serve as an important resource as you pursue your academic goals. It will also provide a good introduction to university life for those of you who are new to the campus.

In these pages, you will find information on important dates in the academic calendar, policies and procedures, student organizations, and the hours and locations of various services and departments. As you read through the handbook, you will learn about each of the academic areas and become familiar with what is available to you outside of the classroom. If you are a first-time student at UMass Boston, you may wish to skim the handbook now to acquaint yourself with the many topics it covers and how they are organized, for future reference. If you are a returning student, you may find the handbook even more valuable as you review it from the perspective of your previous campus experience, finding offerings and activities that relate most closely to your particular academic and extracurricular interests and needs.

UMass Boston is an extraordinary educational community. The energy and dedication of its students, faculty and staff foster a creative and challenging learning environment. This handbook will assist you in charting your own academic course so that you benefit from all UMass Boston has to offer each and every student who studies here.

I look forward to meeting you on campus in the coming semesters. I encourage you to take advantage of the many academic and non-academic opportunities available to you and to seek assistance and guidance, when needed, from your fellow students, faculty and staff.

J. Keith Motley, Ph.D.
