Through its community-oriented policing philosophy, UMass Bostons Department of Public Safety is committed to creating and maintaining a safe and secure environment for the university community. The Department has two components. Blue-uniformed police officers have the same powers, duties, and responsibilities as municipal police officers throughout the Commonwealth, and are trained at state-certified police training academies. Security officers in brown uniforms assist the police by patrolling buildings, maintaining physical security, securing and providing access to campus buildings and rooms, and reporting incidents requiring police intervention. UMass Boston police officers are on duty 24 hours a day, all year long. They patrol the university and adjacent roads in marked police vehicles, on police bicycles, and on foot.
