For New Students

New undergraduate students register at the University Advising Center, as part of initial orientation. New graduate students will be sent information about registration from either their graduate program directors or the Office of Graduate Admissions and the Graduate Registrar.

For Continuing Students

For continuing students, registration is almost entirely by telephone, during specific Touch-Tone Registration periods for each semester. For the fall semester, Touch-Tone Registration starts late in the spring term and lasts into the summer. For the spring term, it begins around the end of the fall semester and ends in January. During Touch-Tone Registration, students can call in as often as necessary, and may add or drop courses as needed. A few guidelines:

As part of Touch-Tone Registration, all matriculated students receive an Invitation to Register and a telephone registration worksheet. The invitation includes a four-digit PIN which, along with the student ID number, provides access to the phone registration system.

The Invitation to Register assigns an “access period”—a specific time period for each student to register. It’s important to register promptly, because courses can fill up quickly. Within each assigned access period, registration is on a first-come-first-served basis. Anyone not receiving the Invitation to Register should contact the appropriate (undergraduate or graduate) Registrar’s Office.

Around the same time the Invitation to Register is sent out, the schedule book for the next term is distributed. Two other useful publications are the undergraduate course catalog and the graduate bulletin, both updated every two years, offering complete course descriptions for every course listed in the schedule book, as well as corequisites and prerequisites for each course. (Corequisite courses must be taken at the same time. Prerequisites might include completion of a certain number of credits, a prior preparatory course, or permission of the instructor.)

About a week before classes begin, each student receives a written course confirmation notice, and is officially registered only for those courses appearing on this notice.

Adding and Dropping Courses

Registration must be initiated during your access period; otherwise a $50.00 late registration fee will be charged. Once registration is initiated, however, you can continue to make schedule changes even after your access period and throughout the add/drop period by using the Touch-Tone Registration System (specific dates appear on the Invitation to Register or
in the schedule book).

Waiting Lists

Waiting lists are reviewed before course confirmation notices are sent. Students moved from the wait list to the official class list for a given course will see such notations on their confirmation notice.
If the course for which you were wait-listed does not appear on the notice, that means you are not registered for it. If you are still interested in taking the course, and the system indicates that no space is available, but you need to take the course to fulfill critical requirements, please contact the instructor (in the case of CAS courses) or the appropriate student services office (in the case of other colleges).

Exceptions

Registration for some CAS courses follows different procedures. In these cases, students may not register through the Touch-Tone System during the add/drop period. To add one of these courses, or to move from the wait list to the class list, you must get a written Add Form from the Registrar’s Office, attend the first meeting of the class, have the instructor sign the form, return the form to the Registrar by the end of the add/drop period.

Please note that the list of these courses can be obtained from the Registrar’s Office.

Graduate Students

If your graduate program requires advising prior to registration, your Invitation to Register will say “Advising Hold, See Your Graduate Program Director.” You should then make an appointment for advising as soon as possible. After you have had advising, the hold will be immediately removed by your program director, and you will be able to use the Touch-Tone Registration System when your access period begins.

Although your access period extends through the entire registration period, there will be a deadline each semester for registering without the $50.00 late fee. The deadline will appear on your Invitation to Register and also in the instructions published in the schedule book. It is to your advantage to initiate your registration before the late fee deadline. You will still be able to use the Touch-Tone System to make changes without penalty throughout your access period.

In order to register for a course for which you were put on the wait list, you must submit a registration form signed by the faculty member teaching the course. The form is due in this office by the end of the registration period, generally the end of the first week of class.
