Getting Active: The Student Centers
The Advocacy Resource for Modern Survival Center (ARMS)
Advocates for students receiving welfare and other forms of public assistance.
Provides information, referral services, and an environment for sharing
and mutual support (W/4/124, 617-287-7169).
The Alcohol and Substance Awareness Center (ASAC)
Sponsors meetings and forums; provides students with resources, educational
material, and referral information on such group meetings as Alcohol Anonymous
and Narcotics Anonymous. Offers safe and relaxing environment for confidential
discussion of problems and concerns (W/4/169, 617-287-7981).
The Asian Student Center
Serves the needs and interests of Asian students on campus, and seeks
to educate the University community about the variety of Asian cultures.
Maintains ties between the University and Asian communities; seeks to
strengthen the presence and participation of Asian students on campus
(W/4/168, 617-287-7984).
The Black Student Center (BSC)
Provides cultural, political, social, and academic activities for students
of African descent, and educates other students about African American
culture and experience. Represents student concerns to the larger University
community. Serves as a gathering place for networking on campus and with
Boston area Black professionals. (W/4/173, 617-287-7982).
The Latino Student Center (Casa Latina)
Provides cultural, social, political, and academic activities for students
of Hispanic descent. Represents student concerns at the University; provides
a central meeting place for informal gatherings. Casa Latina through its
activities seeks to educate the campus community on the richness and variety
of Hispanic culture and experience (W/4/123, 617-287-7945).
The Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual (Queer Student Union) Center
Provides a comfortable, non-threatening, social environment for lesbian,
gay, bisexual, and heterosexual students. Acts as referral service to
other organizations serving the needs of the LGB community, and seeks
to develop an awareness of gay issues within the larger University community,
and specifically to address the problem of homophobia (W/4/125, 617-287-7983).
The Center for Students with disABILITIES
Provides a base for other student organizations with respect to disABILITY
issues. Offers academic support; provides information, references, and
materials about special services and opportunities for people with disABILITIES
and the University community at large. Provides constituents with a clean,
environmentally safe space (M/1/415, 617-287-7965).
The Veterans Center
Serves the needs and interests of the student veteran at the University
and educates the community about the veteran experience in society. Provides
student veterans with a referral and support system, as well as an informal
central meeting place; seeks to strengthen the presence and participation
of student veterans on campus (W/4/167, 617-287-7985).
The Womens Center
Designed to promote a greater awareness of womens issues and concerns.
Serves the needs and interests of female students at UMass Boston, and
serves to educate the University community about the experiences of women
in our society. Maintains ties between the campus and the womens
community at large in the greater Boston area (W/4/171, 617-287-7986).
