The
Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) operates a system
of buses, trolleys, and trains, and Commuter Rail lines that are inexpensive
and convenient for visitors to eastern Massachusetts. While things can
be crowded during rush hours, and riding the MBTA is better than spending
your time stuck in Boston gridlock. With Planning, you can avoid the
crowds and have more money to spend on the important things. For detailed
information on schedules, fares and locations, visit the MBTA Web site
at www.mbta.com.
Boston's subway system (“The T”) has four color- coded lines. The Red, Green, Orange, and Blue Lines that operate from 5:30AM to 12:20 PM, seven days a week, every day of the year. Check on the MBTA website for updated information on the trains and buses. Depending on the station, your wait for a train can be as little as 5 minutes. During evenings, weekends and holidays, the “T” runs less frequently, so wait time do increase. UMass Boston's stop, the “JFK/UMASS”, is on the Red line. At the JFK/UMASS station, free shuttle buses to the campus and the JFK Library are available.
The MBTA's Commuter Rail system, operated by AMTRAK, connects cities in the eastern and central part of the state with downtown Boston. The major terminal in the city are North Station for train serving the North Shore and South Station service the west and the South Shore. In addition, South Station is the connecting point for regular AMTRAK interstate rail service and interstate bus lines. To reach UMass from North Station, take the Green Line train to Park Street or the Orange Line to Downtown Crossing, and then change to the Red Line for JFK/UMass. At South Station, there is a Red Line connection at the station.
The Boston Visitor Pass offers 1, 3, or 7 day(s) of unlimited transportation on all MBTA subway and bus service at substantial savings. For more information call (617) 222-3200, or visit www.mbta.com. Monthly passes for all transit services are also available; call the Pass Program at (617) 222-5218.
Boston's Logan International Airport is also connected to the MBTA. Free MASSPORT shuttle bus outside each terminal will take you to the Airport Blue Line subway stop. Water taxis also operate between the airport and Rowe's wharf (near South Station).
