Current Opportunities

The Foster Furcolo Scholarship Program at UMass Boston

The Foster Furcolo Scholarship program was established in honor of former Massachusetts Governor Foster Furcolo (1957-1960), who played a major role in the creation of the public community college system of the Commonwealth.

Through the Foster Furcolo Scholarship program, the University of Massachusetts Boston will provide, each year, the equivalent of a two year tuition and mandatory fees scholarship to one entering transfer student from each of the public community colleges within the Commonwealth. Each recipient will be nominated by the President of his of her institution; selection is to be based on the following criteria:

1. The nominee must have completed the associate’s degree the spring immediately preceding fall    semester entrance into UMass Boston.  For 2008-2009 this means the nominee must have graduated from the community college in the spring of 2008 and be planning to enroll at UMass Boston for the fall 2008 semester.

2. The nominee must have achieved a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.50.

3. The nominee must qualify as a Massachusetts resident.

4. The nominee must exemplify the community college system’s success in fulfilling the educational mission envisioned by Governor Furcolo.

5. The nominee must apply and be admitted to the University of Massachusetts Boston for the fall 2008 semester.

Each community college president will submit the name of their nominee to the university’s scholarship coordinator by April 23, 2008. The name of the nominee should be communicated via a letter from the community college president that describes why this student is deserving of the scholarship.

Nominations and further information inquiries should be directed to:
