Ventresca Scholarship

Michael A. VentrescaAs president of the UMass Boston charter class of 1969, Michael Ventresca knew the value of an education. Before his untimely death in 1985, he devoted his life to politics and government because he believed deeply in the promise of democracy.

After graduating from Suffolk Law School, Michael became director of the Massachusetts Forest and Park Association, and served as legal council to the state’s offices of Coastal Zone Management and Environmental Affairs. Senator John Kerry said, “he was an idealist whose political conscience was forged in the cauldron of 1960’s activism.” The Ventresca Tree, which now graces the university’s campus, is a lasting reminder of his commitment to environmental protection.

The Michael A. Ventresca Scholarship is awarded annually to an incoming UMass Boston student from Massachusetts who shares Michael’s commitment to public service. Thirty students have benefited to date. As UMass Boston alumni, these recipients continue Michael’s legacy in leadership positions throughout Massachusetts and beyond.
