Urban Scholars Impact on Me

Urban Scholars is helping me prepare for college by informing me that the college process is not as scary as it seems. There is so much that I have to take care of right now because I’m an incoming senior for the school year 2008-2009. It’s really frightening to have to worry about college applications, essays, financial aid, scholarships, and the SATs. Chris Kelly, one of the Urban Scholars leaders, is the college advisor. It feels good to know that whatever I need help with throughout the college application process, he and many others will be there to support me.

Being Part of 25 Years of History

Over the past few weeks, I have been working on designing this new website. What has impressed me most about this experience is that I and a few other scholars are being trusted with this project. And the reason we’ve been given this opportunity is because it’s about us: our ideas, thoughts, and who we are, so what better way to show that than to have us do it ourselves. I’ve learned so much about the history of the program, students who were in the program when it initially started. It was exciting for me to interview Dr. Charles Desmond, one of the founders of the program. It has definitely been hard work, but it is definitely worth it with the results you see here.

My Dream

I have a lot of dreams for the future, as there are so many things that interest me. Right now I’m undecided on exactly what I want to do because I have many options. I could try to go into singing, acting, writing, or physics, law, or political science. I would like to get my bachelor’s degree in physics and doing some acting on the side. I will be the first one in my family to go to college, so I know I have to do my best because I don’t want to let them down. With my college education I want to make myself known. I want to make changes that will not only help me, but people who are dealing with the same situations I went through. I want to make a difference in the world by  helping those who don’t have the opportunities I have, as I appreciate what I have been given. It’s my life and I’m going to make the best of it.
