BTT STRUCTUREThe Office of the Dean of Student Affairs will administer the Beacon Think tank. This project is being co-sponsored by the New England Center for Higher Education (NERCHE). Approximately 25-35 graduate and undergraduate students are selected into the Beacon Think Tank. These students reflect the diversity of UMB students. The Think Tank participants will convene at least three (3) times per semester for Think Tank activities. Participants are notified of the session topics in advance and will have ample time to prepare. Preparation may include researching topics through scholarly or non-scholarly sources including books, journal or newspaper articles and personal interviews. Students should be able to critically synthesize the information received to construct their own thoughts and arguments for dialoguing on the topics. The last think tank session is designed to reflect, assess and evaluate the program and to develop a group Thinking Report. The Thinking Report will suggest programmatic, service-oriented or policy implications from Beacon Think Tank discussions and projects. The Thinking Report may also include other thinking points to consider. These points may be items the group feels need further discussion by themselves or by subsequent Think Tank participants. Each team will also consist of a faculty member and Student Affairs professional. These two will serve as coaches and facilitators for each group. The facilitators are charged with promoting learning, being a resource agent to the group, providing the necessary background information for each topic and ensuring that the dialogues include the discussion constructs. The facilitators will also assist the groups in developing their Thinking Report. |
