Our Mission

The Division of Marine Operations (DMO) was founded at the University of Massachusetts Boston in 1990 to provide support for marine related field activities.

Welcome

An Overview of DMO

In carrying-out this mission DMO partners with various governmental and non-governmental agencies to bring the community to the harbor.

DMO provides transportation to students, staff and faculty for various research and recreational purposes on its fleet of vessels. We also provide dockage, mooring and training to boaters and sailors who wish to use our facilities at Columbia Point.

Message From The Director

In the Fall of 2008 we entered into a unique partnership with the City of Boston Environment Department, whereby we manage and maintain the only commercial pump out vessel in the harbor.  This five year agreement came about as a result of the official designation of Boston Harbor as a No Discharge Area, this means that vessels transiting the harbor are not allowed by law to pump their waste into the ocean.  This is a great environmental initiative that will go a long ways toward the progress already made in the clean-up of Boston Harbor.   In keeping with our educational mission we have collaborated with the EEOS dept on campus in the creation of a new course - Green Boston Harbor Project (EEOS 479) that will teach the future stewards of this resource and provide a more comprehensive assessment and analysis of the local environmental, social and economic conditions.

The Sailing Program has received 3 – Rhodes 19ft sailboats in donation. These are stable platforms with full keels, great for larger groups, we hope to have these fully fitted up this season and available for our students and community.

Year 2009 marks the return of the Tall Ships to Boston. Though this event is smaller in scale than in 2000, it is still an exciting opportunity for the port of

Boston to shine and a great opportunity for UMass Boston to utilize our

waterfront location by offering up close access to these magnificent vessels

through narrated tours out to these vessels at berth. As always please stay

tuned to our website as updates and offerings are added.

Sincerely,
