Communication

You may have students who are deaf or hard of hearing. If you want to communicate with them and do not have easy access to a TTY here are some web-based relay resources you can use:

HOVRS - About Hands On Video Relay Services

This is most useful in a one on one conversation. You call a telephone number while your sitting in your office and you have your web cam operational. As you speak to the ASL interpreter over the phone your student who is deaf watches the interpreter signing via your web cam and signs back. The interpreter then speaks the student's conversation back to you on the phone.

If you were to meet someone in your office, you could both sit at your desk; the deaf person would log into the website and call your phone number from the computer. You would then speak verbally to the ASL interpreter on the phone who would then sign to the computer via the web cam.
