Department Chair of Accounting and Finance in the College of Management, Arindam Bandopadhyaya is credited with inspiring a love of economics and finance in his students, which one colleague describes as “a tall task that somehow appears easy in his capable hands.” Bando, as he is affectionately known, helps develop curricula for the department, runs financial literacy seminars for young people, and travels with his students to New York City and even India to provide them with firsthand experience with global financial markets.

In 2007, Bando helped turn an informal student investing club that tracked the stock market with fake money into what is now the Student Managed Fund, a course that gives students hands-on experience with investment portfolios as they manage a $25,000 donation from the UMass Foundation.

One of Bando’s students says, “As I applied to work for PricewaterhouseCoopers, Professor Bando gave me advice, confidence, and a sense of purpose that anything I put my mind to I can achieve. When I got the job, he was the first to congratulate me.”
