The Center for Technical Education (formerly the Center for Occupational Education) was established in 1983 to meet the needs of prospective vocational educators in metropolitan Boston by offering courses leading to vocational education and vocational special needs approval, as well as courses in technology education. The center has served over 10,000 vocational-technical educators and other school personnel and now also offers additional programs and services dedicated to enhancing proficiency and professionalism within the field.

The center is administered by UMass Boston's College of Advancing and Professional Studies but operates under the academic aegis of the university's College of Education and Human Development, which provides expertise in research, curriculum design, and the development of pedagogical competencies.
