Business Analytics (online)
Business analytics is a crucial tool to guide business operations towards achieving strategic objectives in any industry, from healthcare to finance and retail. Understanding and learning Business Analytics (BA) is therefore becoming a necessity for all business professionals. The College of Management at UMass Boston is now offering an online certificate consisting of four courses focused on the transformative capabilities of BA and the technologies needed for implementation.
The Business Analytics Certificate is a 12-credit, fully online program designed to facilitate integrating BA into enterprise business processes. UMass Boston's College of Management was recently ranked 47 for Information Management by QS TopMBA, highlighting the quality of our IT offerings.

MSIS 670-Enterprise Business Intelligence (offered in Fall and Spring semesters)
This introductory course emphasizes the basic concepts of business intelligence and optimization. It relies on technology as a key component for helping businesses improve their routine operational and strategic decisions. Along with learning the fundamentals of business intelligence, students will engage in hands-on exercises using three popular technology, Microsoft BI application, Tableau Software, and IBM Cognos Express to experience the power of technology to derive rapid insight from data.
MSIS 671-Enterprise Data Warehousing (Fall semesters only)
This course teaches how to capture structured, semi-structured and unstructured data from several different data source types using relevant technology. This course will focus on using the Graphical User Interface of InfoSphere BigInsights to collect, manipulate, analyze, view and export data. The course format includes hands-on exercises using commercial data, learning data modeling, and implementation tools. Case analysis is used to demonstrate the application of the concepts in a real world setting.
MSIS 672-Enterprise Data Mining and Predictive Analytics (Fall semesters only)
This course teaches data mining techniques and their use in business decision-making. This is a hands-on course that provides an understanding of the key methods of data visualization, exploration, association, classification, prediction, clustering, and others. Students will learn how to solve business problems using data mining tools and applying them to data. IBM tools and professional training materials will be incorporated in to the course.
MSIS 656-Enterprise Information Storage Management (Spring semesters only)
This course helps students understand the latest storage and communication technologies. The course focuses on network and storage architectures for classic, virtualized and cloud environments that meet today’s needs and scale for future growth. The course addresses questions such as; how to architect and select an optimal storage network, how to define and apply the best storage configuration to protect users data, how to provide optimized Return On Investment using computer virtualization and how to monitor, report and manage large amounts of data over time.
The following courses may be required to be completed as pre-requisites for the Business Analytics certificate. This will be determined during the review of the candidates’ application, and the candidate will be notified in advance. If required, these classes will need to be completed prior to enrolling in MSIS 670, MSIS 671, MSIS 672, or MSIS 656:
MBA MS 630 - Business Statistics
Statistics is a set of mathematical techniques to get as much useful information as possible and to draw correct conclusions from it. Business statistics is a language for communicating efficiently and precisely about numerical information and its implications. Since Information is the key to making better business decisions and thus achieving better performance, it is important for any business professional to learn at least the basic concepts and techniques of this discipline. Business intelligence includes data analytics, which relies on an understanding of data measurement and analysis that embodies business statistics. (may be required based on academic and professional background)
MSIS 618 - Database Management Systems
This course provides a broad coverage of the technology involved in the management of data. The course material is designed to introduce the students to the field of Database Management (Solving business problems with data storage, manipulation, and retrieval emphasis) and Database Management Systems (DBMS) illustrated mostly by the use of the relational Oracle database system. The course pursues the objective of initiating the students to data modeling techniques and data manipulation. Dealing with business analytics, students need to first understand data management and manipulation. (may be required based on academic and professional background)
Applicants for the Business Analytics certificate** will need to submit:
• Online application and fee ($60 domestic, $100 international)
• Official transcripts (completed bachelor’s degree required)
• Submission of TOEFL or IELTS score (required for all students that submit undergraduate transcripts where the national language is not English. Minimum required score for TOEFL is 85 to be considered).
• Resume (3-5 years of related work experience required)
• 3 letters of recommendation
• Statement of Intent. Please express in less than 1000 words:
