Advanced Discourse Analysis in Education

The purpose of this course is to consider language, literacy, and discourse in relation to education, society, and culture. More specifically, we will discuss how literacy as the mastery of the language of secondary discourses informs understandings of the ways in which the world is read in particular times, places, and circumstances. We will begin with the assumption that language functions to scaffold both action and human affiliation in cultures, social groups, and institutions. As such, experiences and perspectives area created and assumed in the process of becoming literate.
