U.S. Society and Culture, 1860-1940

Description:
This course traces the dreams and realities of mens and womens lives in the United States from the Civil War through the Great Depression. Topics include the Westward Movement, the Second Industrial Revolution, immigrants and the city, World War I, the great Migration and the Harlem Renaissance, and the emergence of a consumer society in the 1920s. Among the materials analyzed in this course are primary sources such as photographs and paintings, film, short stories and poetry, letters and diaries, and public documents, as well as secondary-source analyses of specific themes and issues presented in scholarly historical essays.
