Students in this seminar will the explore various theoretical frameworks and methodological approaches used by communication/psychology scholars to study media stereotyping, and survey what is known about stereotypes in media by way of existing research. The course will highlight how media depict social groups, why media messages depict social groups in particular ways, and the effects of those messages on audiences’ beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. In particular, we will examine patterns in the way the media represents people of differing genders, races, sexual orientations, classes, religions, ages, body types, and abilities, with a primary focus on marginalized identities and groups. There will be a heavy focus on screen media (i.e., television and film), although examples from print, music, and social media may also be incorporated as it pertains to the topic at hand.
