Crystal Barker Schaaf works on the development and use of operational albedo products to monitor the Earth's environments from polar-orbiting space platforms. She is a NASA science team member for the Moderate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board the Terra and Aqua satellites and for the VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) sensor on board the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) satellite.   She is also a USGS science team member for the Landsat 8 program and a named collaborator on the NASA Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) space based lidar mission to fly on the International Space Station (ISS).

Schaaf's current interests include modeling reflectance anisotropy and albedo and using remote sensing data to reconstruct and monitor the reflectance characteristics of various land surfaces, including vegetation phenology and land surface change. More recently she has also been involved in the development and use of ground-based lidar systems to characterize biomass and vegetation structure for carbon stock monitoring.
