Additional requirements (see below).

Electives:
Besides the required courses, a student must take three other Mathematics courses, numbered 300 or higher.

Notes:

  •     Students who declared their major as Mathematics (BA or BS) prior to the Fall 2009 semester must take PHYSIC 114 instead of Math 280 - Introduction to Proofs . However, students who have not completeded Math 450 - An Introduction to Real Analysis by Spring 2010 must also take Math 280 - Introduction to Proofs , as that course is a pre-requisite for MATH 450 starting with the Spring 2011 semester.
  •     Math 140 - Calculus I may be replaced by Math 145 - Calculus I for the Life and Environmental Sciences.
  •     A student who completed Math 360 - Abstract Algebra I prior to Fall 2005, may replace Math 361 - Abstract Algebra II by a fourth elective course.
  •     With the permission of the Department, one of the electives may be replaced by a cognate course. These include Computer Science courses, and Mathematical Physics (Phys 616) and Environmental Statistics (ES 611).
  •     Prospective high school teachers should consider taking Math 370 - History of Mathematics, Math 458 - Theory of Numbers, and Math 460 - Survey of Geometry.

Further Rules and Requirements:

  •     A minimum of a 2.0 GPA (a C average) in the major is required for graduation. Only courses taken at UMass Boston are included in computing the average.
  •     No requirement may be taken pass/fail.
