Central Receiving

General Responsibilities

The Receiving Department is responsible for logging all packages from UPS, FedEx Hub, and any other trucking company that delivers directly to UMass Boston. With the exception of capital equipment (which requires inventory and tagging by the Property Department), the receiving staff is responsible for the delivery of items and obtaining a signature for proof of delivery usually within one (1) day of receipt.  Receiving is not responsible for the delivery or receipt of personal packages.

The Receiving Department stocks UPS and FedEx shipping supplies (labels, boxes, envelopes, etc.)

Please note that certain equipment such as laptops require a fully executed property pass be submitted to the Property Department prior to the release of such equipment.

Requesting Surplus Furniture

Surplus storage generally contains used file cabinets, bookshelves, chairs, desks, and work tables.

It is the Receiving Department that determines the disposition of furniture and whether a piece of furniture is salvageable, or worth saving for refurbishment. Furniture will remain in storage or be discarded depending on condition after six (6) months.

To obtain surplus furniture, please contact the Customer Service Department at 617.287.4000, and they will take your request for delivery of surplus furniture. The Customer Service staff will create a HEAT ticket, which will be sent to the Receiving Department for action. The Receiving Department will then contact you within three (3) business days of receiving the heat ticket to coordinate the delivery of the furniture.

Removing Surplus Equipment

Please see the procedures as noted in the Property Department Inventory Control Policy and Procedure for Moveable Equipment, Section 4.6, Surplus Property-Disposal.

Special Request/Hours of Operation

For special requests (i.e., setting up a new office) or time-sensitive moves, a representative from the Receiving Department will meet with you to evaluate your needs and to best assist you.
