Application Requirements

Eligibility

To apply for admission to graduate study at UMass Boston, you must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution of recognized standing, or an international equivalent.

Graduate study is available in two forms:

  • As a matriculated student you will be fully admitted into the graduate program, and allowed to pursue studies with the goal of receiving a graduate degree or certificate.
  • As a non-degree seeking student you will not be formally admitted to the program, but you will be allowed to enroll in graduate-level courses when space is available. Please visit the Registrar’s non-degree information page to learn more.

Admission Guidelines

  • Admission is granted only for the semester requested and cannot be guaranteed for a later date.
  • Admission to graduate study does not automatically indicate approval of candidacy for an advanced degree. Please refer to your specific graduate program for more information about the degree timeline and requirements.

Required Supporting Materials

In addition to completing the Online Application, you are required to submit the following supporting materials for admission into all UMass Boston graduate programs.

  1. Official Transcripts
  2. Applicable Test Scores
  3. Letters of Recommendation
  4. Statement of Purpose
  5. Non-refundable Application Fee
  6. Program Specific Requirements

Official Transcripts

You must submit official transcripts from all institutions attended, even if you were not awarded a degree. A transcript is considered official if it is either sent directly from the institution, or is mailed in an envelope sealed by the issuing institution. Please note that transcripts scanned and emailed by the applicant are not acceptable.

Transcripts are welcomed from the eScrip, Clearinghouse, and Parchment electronic transcript delivery services. Please note:

Transcripts sent via eScrip or the Clearinghouse must be sent directly to UMass Boston’s Graduate Admissions account with these services. Do not have them sent to an email address.

Transcript notifications submitted through the Parchment service must be sent to the Graduate Admissions Office email account (bos.gadm@umb.edu).

Transcripts must demonstrate the following:

  • a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale (or international equivalent) in all undergraduate work
  • a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university

Former Boston State College Students: Applicants must indicate on their form the academic programs in which they were enrolled and the dates of attendance. The Office of Graduate Admissions will obtain copies of the applicant’s Boston State College transcripts.

Applicable Test Scores

Refer to your intended graduate program of study to determine which test scores are required. Please have the testing agency send your test scores directly to UMass Boston. Unofficial test score reports are not acceptable. UMass Boston’s institution code is 3924.

Applicants whose undergraduate work was completed outside of the United States may be required to submit English proficiency test results, even if they are permanent residents or citizens of the U.S. Please refer to the International Graduate Applicants page to see if this requirement applies to you.

Letters of Recommendation

Applicants must submit three (3) letters of recommendation that meet the following requirements:

  • former professors familiar with the applicant’s academic abilities and capacity to perform graduate-level work provide the strongest recommendations; at least one letter should fit this description
  • recommenders should have worked closely with the applicant in an academic, professional, or community service setting
  • letters should not be written by friends or family members of the applicant
  • letters should focus on the applicant’s abilities and past academic performance, while also indicating an ability to effectively complete graduate-level work

Recommenders can be registered through the online application System by entering a valid email address. Once you have submitted your application, UMass Boston will send an email to each registered recommender with instructions for submitting their recommendation online. Because the email does not go out until you’ve submitted your application, it is important that you plan ahead to ensure that your application is complete by the application deadline for your intended program of study.

If a recommender would prefer not to submit their letter electronically, the recommendation form can be downloaded. Please have the recommendation mailed directly to:

Statement of Purpose

The statement of purpose is your opportunity to show the graduate admissions committee your reasons for wishing to pursue graduate study, as well as your specific interests and goals.

The two-part statement should consist of the following:

  • an initial section of up to 300 words describing your reasons for wishing to pursue graduate studies
  • a second section of no less than 1,200 words describing your specific interests, the kind of work you intend to perform, and your goals within the program to which you are applying

The program to which you are applying may have other instructions regarding the content and nature of this statement. Departmental requirements supersede these general requirements. Be sure to check with your intended program of study to ensure you correctly complete the statement of purpose.

The statement should follow these formatting guidelines:

  • essays should be typed
  • each page must have a heading that includes your name and the last four digits of your Social Security Number, if available
  • if mailed, the essay must be printed on plain, U.S. letter-size paper

Non-refundable Application Fee

Each application requires a non-refundable fee of $60 for domestic applicants and $100 for international applicants.

If you are submitting an online application, the fee must be paid by Visa or MasterCard at the time of submission.

Paper applications should include a personal check (domestic applicants only), cashier’s check, demand draft, or money order made out in the appropriate amount to "UMass Boston".

Note to international applicants: Personal checks cannot be accepted, and the non-refundable fee must be payable in U.S. currency.

Program Specific Requirements

Many programs have additional requirements. Please check with your intended graduate program of study to ensure that you submit a complete application.

Please note:

In addition to the above requirements, all admitted applicants must complete the Immunization Form found at www.umb.edu/healthservices/forms. Please read the immunization requirements carefully and be sure to submit your completed immunization form prior to the start of classes.  Failure to submit this form will result in an administrative hold being placed on your student account. Help us keep UMB and all of our communities healthy!

The form must be returned to the University Health Services Office (2nd floor Quinn Admin Building), not the Office of Graduate Admissions.
