The Betty and Matt Flaherty Endowment for Urban Cultural History
The Betty & Matt Flaherty Endowment
The Betty and Matt Flaherty Endowment exists thanks to the generous support of Patricia Flaherty. Patricia Flaherty received a BA from the University of Massachusetts Boston, and an MBA from Northeastern University. Currently, the Betty and Matt Flaherty Endowment sponsors yearly symposiums and additional programming through the Center for the Study of Humanities, Culture, & Society. In recent years, the Betty and Matt Flaherty Symposium has addressed such issues as the materialization of racism in everyday objects like sports mascots, as well as the mandatory boarding school experience of indigenous students in the United States and Canada. The symposiums are open to the University of Massachusetts Boston faculty and students, as well as students from local public high schools and the greater Boston community.
In previous years, from 2011 to 2013, the Betty and Matt Flaherty Endowment sponsored the Research Center for Urban Cultural History visiting scholars fellowship at the University of Massachusetts Boston. The Betty and Matt Flaherty Fellowship sponsored research projects pertaining to urban cultural history; the projects were interdisciplinary and focused on the cultural history of cities, urban life, urban networks, urban materials, and the urban experience.
