Research in this Focus area includes understanding how people value the environment or ecosystem services in different contexts and ways to make coastal planning and aquaculture more sustainable especially in light of climate change.  This research involves understanding how humans and natural systems interact and where policy solutions can be applied for ecological sustainable development.  The research projects focus on aquaculture, food innovations, coastal protection against climate change, and water quality, with a particular focus on engaging communities in decision-making.  Students working in this Focus area may be involved with mining and interpreting datasets, coding and analyzing transcripts from community meetings, and building systems models to determine interactions between humans and ecosystems.
