31 October 2016 through 3 February 2017
organized by Curator and UMass Boston Professor, Carol G. J. Scollans
John Joseph Enneking’s Boston: A Centennial Exhibition is an exhibition of 19th and 20th century paintings by Boston artist John Joseph Enneking. A celebrated member of the Boston arts community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Enneking devoted his life to the preservation of nature through his paintings, lectures, writings and advocacy. He was the first Parks commissioner for the city of Hyde Park and was instrumental in creating and safeguarding for future generations nature conservancies, such as the Blue Hills reservation and the Enneking Parkway. November 2016 is the centennial anniversary of the death of this esteemed artist, who has long been under recognized. This show brings together 24 paintings and drawings never exhibited together before gleaned from both private collections and public institutions, documenting Enneking’s transcriptions of the city of Boston, Neponset, Milton, and Hyde Park.
