Student Printing

There are many printer and copy stations across campus for student use.

Students can take advantage of our numerous print stations to print their documents. Students have $20 of free printing for Fall/Spring semester and $15 for Winter/Summer sessions on their account. Students can print from their own laptop after they installed the printer drivers below. Prints are 10 cents per page after you used up your free allotment.

Printing requires you to log in to a print release station with your student email address and password. If you are having trouble with your account password, please contact the IT Service Desk.
When your account is depleted, you may purchase a copy card for $1.00 at the card dispensing machines. YOU MUST PURCHASE A CARD FIRST and THEN REPLENISH WITH ADDITIONAL CASH.

Please Note: THE VENDING MACHINE DOES NOT RECOGIZE BILLS OVER $1.00 WHEN PURCHASING A COPY CARD.

If you lose money/pages due to printer error (e.g. blank or garbled pages) or a copy card vending machine error, email printaid.heat@umb.edu. Please provide your UMB email address, the asset id# of the printer (or card dispenser), and the amount of money or pages lost, and we will contact you for a refund.

Computer Setup

To print from your laptop, you must first download the print drivers (see below).

Windows laptops

*To find out if your computer is 32 bit or 64 bit, right click on “Computer” and go to properties at the bottom of the menu. Under “System”, you will see “System type“, that will tell you how many bit your machine is.

For 32 bit machines, download one of these files:

Black & white prints

Color prints (50 cents per page)

For 64 bit machines, download one of these files:

Black & white prints

Color prints (50 cents per page)

Locate the resulting zip file in your Downloads folder and double click the zip file to decompress it. Double click the exe file to install it.

If you install both print drivers, remember to choose which printer to use in your print dialog box.

Remember, color prints are $.50 per page! Be sure to select the appropriate print driver when sending your document to print.

Once you print your document, proceed to the print release station to print it. You have up to one week to release the printing from the release station to printer. You will need your student email username and password. If you have forgotten your password, contact the IT Service Desk.

Mac laptops

Download the file UMB_WiFi_Print_Mac from our server. Locate the file in your Downloads folder and double click to unzip it.

Double click the file "UMB_Popup_9_0_1.dmg" to mount it on your desktop. This should open a new Finder window, but if it does not, locate the UMB Popup drive in your Finder sidebar. Double click the file "Popup.pkg" and follow instructions to install the software.

Once the installation is complete, you will be able to print to the virtual printer "UMB_Mac_Printer."

Once you print your document, proceed to the print release station to print it. You have up to one week to release the printing from the release station to printer. You will need your student email username and password. If you have forgotten your password, contact the IT Service Desk.

Printing Instructions

Printing is a two step process. First, from any public workstation (or laptop, as described above) you may print to any of the networked printers. Once the print is complete, you must visit a Print Release Station to have your print job released to the printer. The following steps will walk you through the process:

First, send your print job from any public workstation around campus. In addition each satellite print release station has a public workstation to assist you in sending your job to the printer from that location. BE SURE TO LOGOUT of the workstation and release station when you are done.

  1. Choose print. (e.g. selecting File -> Print or by pressing the appropriate Print icon.)  Select printer 9050 on PHAROS-SERVER.
  2. You may select Properties to change the settings (e.g. Print on Both Sides (UL printers only) and Portrait/Landscape Orientation).

Next, you must release the print job from a Print Release Station. If you are having trouble with your account password, please contact the IT Service Desk.

  1. Login to a Print Release Station, you must be a current student enrolled in a class.
  2. Enter your UMB email username same as you did when you submitted the print job, and then enter your UMB email password.
  3. If you have free pages remaining on your account, you may, with the mouse, select the print job you'd like to release and click print.
  4. Otherwise you must:

       5.   When you are done, select logout.

Note: If you have difficulty with printing, call the IT Lab Main Office at 617-287-4883.
DO NOT try to clear a paper jam, call for assistance, and move to another print release station.  If you lose money and need a refund, please email printaid.heat@umb.edu
