Reserving a Lab for Classroom Use

  • Semester long reservations are valid though the last day of classes unless otherwise indicated. If you plan to give your final exam in the labs, you must submit a separate request via the General Use Lab Reservation Form

Computer labs located in the Upper Level and Third floor of the Healey Library are available for classroom use during the following hours:

Monday-Thursday 8:00am-9:45pm
Friday 8:00am-6:45pm

The blue, white, gold, purple, mac A and mac C labs are available for classroom use. To reserve a lab you need to fill out a lab reservation form.

The lab formerly known as the green lab has been converted into the "Decision Making Research Lab" owned and operated by faculty. The lab will no longer be available for classroom scheduling. Request for labs should be made one week prior to need to allow for proper scheduling and availability posting. If non-supported software or website downloads are needed, we suggest you requests the lab at least one and one half week in advance and it is strongly suggested that you test out the site prior to your class meeting time.

Lab request  for an upcoming semester should be sent two months prior to the start of the semester. Although request can be made at any time, confirmation for non-current semester request will be sent one month prior to the beginning of that semester. (ex. request for fall 2014 received spring 2014 will not be confirmed until August 1, 2014)

Request made prior to the deadline are processed first. The University of Massachusetts Boston academic programs lasting the entire semester get first priority followed by short term reservations (i.e., for one day or one month only). Grant funded programs not directly related to the students enrolled in the University meeting the deadline will be processed next. Any reservations regardless of program status received after the deadline are filled on availability and first-come first-served basis.

Request can be made by submitting the General Use Labs Reservation Form or by sending an email to GULMGR@umb.edu. Request made through email must contain the information in the required fields of the reservation form.

We are using MS Office 2010 in our Windows XP Professional labs and MS Office 2008 in our Macintosh OS X labs. Division of IT supports a variety of software packages in the General Use Labs. By supported we mean software that is licensed, installed and upgraded by Division of IT staff. Please refer to Hardware & Software for an up-to-date list.

Academic departments may provide software to be installed onto the network through prior arrangements with Division of IT. All software installed on the networks or hard drives must be licensed for the appropriate number of stations in the lab. The ED Tech Operations Manager retains a copy of the license agreement on file.

If you intend to use software installed during a previous semester on the networks or hard drives, you must call to verify that the software is still available by contacting Donna Hill at 617-287-5265 for Windows software or Henry Lay at 617-287-4052 for Macintosh software.
