UMass Boston VLabs (Virtual Computer Labs) allow students, faculty and staff to access the university's software anytime from anywhere, even from home. You now have access to any tool or application available in an on-campus lab on your laptop, home PC, and even your tablet or smartphone.
Currently, access to VLabs is per request only. Please email ComputerLabs@umb.edu to request access to VLabs. Access requests may take up to 48 hours to process. Once you get an access notification from email@example.com, you may proceed to click the "Access VLabs" link below, or view step-by-step instructions on how to connect to and use VLabs.
All virtual labs are equipped with the following software:
- Microsoft Office 2013 Professional Plus
- Acrobat Pro XI
- STATA 15
- SPSS 24
- Matlab R2016b
- IDEA 10.3
- Web browsers (Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Internet Explorer)

The following is basic information for using Web Client. For more features, use your own computer or device with the VMware Horizon View Client installed (instructions below).
Click the Access "VLabs" link above
Click the option on the right to use the VMware Horizon View Client over HTML and log in with your username and password.
Once you have logged in, you will see all available labs that you have access to. To connect, click on the monitor icon for the lab and you will automatically be connected and logged into the virtual machine you chose.

Please note the following limitations of using VMware Horizon View HTML Access client instead of the VMware Horizon View client:
Audio will not work if using the HTML access client
USB access and redirection is not supported
You cannot transfer clipboard contents from the client system and the View desktop
The mouse pointer may not change. For example, when highlighting text, the pointer will not change into a cursor. Also, when placing your mouse over a hyperlink, it will not change to a hand to denote it is clickable.
There are many keyboard shortcuts that do not work in the View client:
Control + T
Control + W
Control + N
Windows key combinations
Command key (For Mac OS)
Alt + Enter
Control + Alt + <any key>
Caps Lock + <a modifier key>
Control + Alt + Delete will not work, you must use the “Send Ctrl+Alt+Delete” button from the drop-down menu in the client menu bar
Many students have asked how to transfer their data on or off of our VCL. We have partnered with Microsoft in order to make this easy -- just log in to your OneDrive and upload any files you want to use. Then log on to VCL and they’ll be in OneDrive – the icon is right on the desktop.
You can also use USB storage devices (USB key, flash drive, etc.), to store data.
